전주시, 국내 최초 탄소중립 교육 도입을 위한 공동 교육협약 체결
전주시, 국내 최초 국제인증 탄소중립 교육 학교 도입 추진
[로이슈 우유정 기자] 전주시정연구원 전주시탄소중립지원센터는 넷제로아카데미(주)와 국내 최초로 탄소중립 교육을 학교 교육 과정에 도입하기 위한 공동 교육협약을 체결했다.
전주시 교육발전특구 사업의 일환으로 추진되는 이 사업은 전주지역 초·중·고등학교 교원과 학생을 대상으로 글로벌 스텐다드에 맞춘 탄소중립 교육을 제공하는 것을 목표로 하고 있다.
이를 위해 탄소중립지원센터는 영국 맨체스터 카본리터리시 트러스트(Carbon Literacy Trust, CLT) 재단의 탄소이해력 교육(Carbon LiteracyⓇ)을 국내 최초로 지자체 차원에서 공식 도입하고, 전주지역 교사와 학생들에게 국제적 수준의 탄소중립 교육과 전문 자격 취득 기회를 교육발전특구 특별교부금을 활용해 무상으로 제공할 예정이다.
특히 센터는 이번 교육을 통해 단순한 환경교육을 넘어, 기후 과학과 국제 탄소 규제, 기후 위기 대응 전략 등을 체계적으로 학습할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 계획이다.
교육은 Zoom을 활용한 온라인 멀티미디어 강의(총 8시간)로 진행되며, 교육을 성공적으로 마친 참가자에게는 영국 CLT 재단에서 국제 공인 ‘Carbon Literate’ 자격증이 발급된다. 이 자격증은 향후 진학 및 유학 준비과정에서 ESG 활동 실적으로도 활용할 수 있다.
이와 함께 전주시탄소중립지원센터와 넷제로아카데미(주)는 이번 협약을 바탕으로 전주지역 학생을 위한 맞춤형 교재와 교육 영상을 제작해 무상으로 제공함으로써 학교 교육과 연계한 체계적인 탄소중립 교육을 정착시킨다는 구상이다.
시는 이번 협약을 계기로 교육발전특구사업과 연계해 학교 교육 내에서 기후변화 대응 교육을 더욱 활성화하고, 지속가능한 기후행동을 실천할 수 있는 미래 인재를 양성하는 데 힘쓸 계획이다.

Jeonju to Introduce Nation’s First Internationally Certified Carbon Neutrality Education in Schools

Jeonju Carbon Neutrality Support Center, under the Jeonju Policy Research Institute, has signed an educational partnership agreement with Net Zero Academy Inc. to introduce carbon neutrality education into school curricula—marking the first such initiative in South Korea.
As part of Jeonju’s Educational Development Special Zone project, this initiative aims to provide carbon literacy education aligned with global standards to elementary, middle, and high school teachers and students in the region.
To this end, the Carbon Neutrality Support Center will be the first local government body in South Korea to officially adopt the Carbon LiteracyⓇ program developed by the UK-based Carbon Literacy Trust (CLT). Utilizing special grants from the Special Education Development Fund, the center will offer free training and internationally recognized certification opportunities to local educators and students.
The program goes beyond traditional environmental education, offering structured learning in areas such as climate science, international carbon regulations, and climate crisis response strategies.
The training will be delivered via Zoom in the form of 8 hours of online multimedia lectures. Upon successful completion, participants will be awarded the internationally recognized ‘Carbon Literate’ certificate issued by the CLT in the UK. This certification can also serve as a notable ESG-related credential when applying for domestic or international university programs.
Additionally, the Jeonju Carbon Neutrality Support Center and Net Zero Academy Inc. plan to develop and distribute customized teaching materials and educational videos tailored to Jeonju’s student population—at no cost—further embedding structured carbon neutrality education into the school system.
The city of Jeonju expects this agreement to strengthen climate change education within schools through its Educational Development Special Zone initiative. Ultimately, the goal is to cultivate future leaders capable of enacting sustainable climate action.
